Post-Placement Meeting Part I

Thailand requires 3 post-placement meetings with a social worker before they will approve finalization of the adoption. Technically, for now, we are only Maya's guardians. But once the 3 post-placement reports are completed (takes at least 6 months), our agency will provide us with the approval we need to finalize the adoption in our state.

We had our first post-placement meeting with our social worker yesterday. And like clockwork, our social worker did not disappoint us. She updated us on the latest family news. Let me see if I can recall it all:

Both daughters are now engaged. One is getting married in July and has invited 400 people to the wedding. The husband was in a fraternity and has kept in touch with everybody he has ever known. The bridesmaid dresses are ordered but there were some issues. The other daughter is bigger than the rest of the girls and there were some issues finding dresses in her size. The two girls got into a big fight at a bridesmaid shop and she had to step in. The shoes were a bit of an issue too as she wears a size 11. The other daughter is getting married the week before Christmas. That wedding should be smaller. Blah, blah, blah...

She's too funny. She did ask lots of questions about Maya's adjustment and wanted to see her bedroom. Our meeting would not be complete without a crazy comment or two. Our social worker asked about her language development and whether she was speaking before we got her. To be exact, she asked, "Was she speaking Chinese or something when y'all got her?" We told her yes, she was speaking Chinese but not a word of Thai. We didn't say that but we really wanted to.

Fun times.

Your social worker sound like a true red neck... The daugthers weddings sound like Bridezilla (not that I watch it or anything :)
I can't believe she asked if Maya was speaking Chinese so two things spring to mind: either she's completely ignorant all kids from Asia are the same to her or she can't be bothered to read her files before she goes to a family... or both. Nice!

"Was she speaking Chinese or something before ya'll got her"....Wow that was sooo hilarious! I tried to read it to Marc (southern accent and all) and was laughing so hard, I actually had to wipe the tears off my keyboard!
That is so classic...Really enjoyed that one, thanks!!!!!
...Post Placement Meeting Part II can't come soon enough for me...

The secretary at my last office was just like this social worker. Fake blond of about 40-year old....your typical 80's rocker girl. You know Bon Jovi, Whitesnake with big hair and all. She still has the hair, it's great. Anyway, when Maeli and Steph came to the office to visit....Maeli would walk around and get into things and Steph would say a few things quickly in French to her.....my secretary would shake her head and say to me "I don't know how she understands that"! As if all babies know English and you have to work harder if they are born in a different country. She's also the one that has struggled to get pregnant....one time she was talking to Steph about adoption (mind you those that don't know, Steph is French, ie...she's not from here) and told her she didn't want to do no adoption because she wanted an American baby. People like this are priceless....you would think that it could only be in movies....but they are real....and they all voted for BUSH ;)

Love you Dave, Weaz
